Your cousin has to open the doc in her Word then do "Save As" and specify the earlier version of Word. If you don't have Word 2007, you can't do it for her.

1. Download and install OpenOffice, version 3, the FREE alternative to Microsoft Office, which opens Microsoft DOCX files. Once open, you can read them, edit them and save them as DOC files! That way anybody can read them and in the process you are supporting open source and open computing standards (and it won’t cost you a penny!). OpenOffice is compatible with Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access and contains a host of useful tools including integrated PDF export*.

2. Ask the sender, in Word 2007, to do a "Save As" and select an earlier version of Word as the file type.

3. Download and install Microsoft’s free Compatibility Pack.

When saving on word 2007, you will need to click on the office icon, then save as, then save as 97-04 compatibility file.

Also if you have the older word, you could go to Microsoft and download the 2007 compatibility files from the Microsoft website so it can read office 2007 format files.

If you can't easily get to the original version to re-open and save in 1997-2003 format, i.e. .doc format, then I suggest you go onto Microsoft's site and download the compatibility program to enable you to open 2007 files in earlier versions.

copy the file and paste it in the new file, then save it.
