There are compatibility tools in Office 2007 and 2010 so there's no issue there. However, MS will not support Windows XP for much longer so the sooner you upgrade to Windows 7 the better.



You can install your software via a DVD drive with USB and then transfer the docs with a Belkin transfer cable. I recently transferred docs from a desktop to a laptop without any problems at all.

Next Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 was never developed for the Netbook or Notebook systems so installing XP or Vista on a Netbook will cause problems, because there will be no hardware drivers in either operating systems for the Netbooks.



Though Windows 7 is installed on Netbooks it was never developed for the netbooks or notebook systems, Microsoft pulled a fast one on Netbook/Notebook consumers what they did was to cut windows 7 down to the bare minimum operating system so that it would run on the Netbooks or Notebooks

don't use works at all, its complete crap. as for your programs, there is a relatively simple solution. you can make an image of your discs using various programs, i like imgburn alot..... http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tools/Data-CD-DVD-Burning/ImgBurn.shtml very simple and totally free. create the disc image file, transfer it to your netbook using usb or network or whatever. install daemon tools lite http://download.cnet.com/Daemon-Tools-Lite/3000-2646_4-10778842.html also free though watch for it installing toolbars during installation, you can opt out. daemon tools creates a virtual disk drive and all you need to do is mount that image file you just created with imgburn in daemon tools and it will behave just like you had a disc drive and you just inserted the disc.

First things first, compatibility between XP and Windows 7 is, for the most part, pretty good. I can play games from the days of win95-98 on my windows 7 x64 machine without using much more than compatibility mode and run as administrator (right click the executable file and go to properties then to the compatibility tab to see what I’m talking about)



Secondly getting you're old software on your new net book. As these don't tend to come with cd/dvd drives this can be a bit tricky. There are a few ways to go about this and the easiest is to get a cd/dvd external drive. also if you know how to make iso's (cd/dvd software images) then you can use a program like magic disc (free) to "mount" the image and load your software by networking into the computer with the iso (disc images). it will require some technical skill to do this though it is by far the best method in my opinion.



Also if you care to stay legit, don't forget about proper licensing... be sure to uninstall anything you want to move from your old computer before putting it on the new computer unless you have the proper licensing to have the software installed on both. That is... if you care.



Office 2003 or better will be compatible with windows 7. The other editions should be as well but i haven't tested personally with them so I can't say for sure. Also if you get Windows 7 ultimate edition you can always use windows virtualization compatibility "http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx" (not good for gaming).
