Question:
Mail Merge from MS Word to Active Directory?
2013-04-22 05:21:26 UTC
Once I go into MS word I select Mailings at the top, then Start Mail Merge, then step by step Mail Merge Wizard, I select Directory as the document type, and then click next at the bottom, at this point it asks how i want to set up my document and I might have to select start a template at some point but i think what is most important and crucial to this process is the next step, which would be step 3, so as i just select use current document and hit next at the bottom, select recipients........

Now i select recipients using an existing list- and click browse , a window appears, i select new source, again the goal is to pull information from active directory, a data connection wizard appears, i select other/advanced, then for data link properties i select from the list "OLE DB Provider for Microsoft Directory Services" This is as far as i can get with this project, i don't know what to enter for the data source other than what i have tried so far which has been the domain name (server name) of our Active Directory which once i try that and select Use windows NT integrated security, i get an error. I need to know what to enter into the data source and location and if its possible to use windows NT integrated security.

Hi Mike,

I am going to explain you how Mail Merge works in word 2007, ( May I know your version)

Before start mail merging you need to have the details in excel or access (General, I personally opt this to send mails to number of recipients, You need to have TO and From emaill ids to start with )

1. Go to Mailing tab ---> Start Mail Merge

under this you will see Letters, Email Messages, Envelop, Labels, Directory, Step by Step Mail Merge Wizard.

a. Letters / Envelop / Labels : To create multiple Letters / Envelop / Labels from single FROM ADDRESS to multiple TO ADDRESS.

b. Email : Send a single email to multiple address, for example you get the discount coupon from ebay.com to your mail, similarly others will get the same mail, .. this is called MAIL MERGE

2. Select Set by Set Mail Merge wizard (before doing this, hope the content is ready to send the mail, if not please be sure that the content is ready for sending)

3. Select Doc type : Email - Messages (right side of the word doc)

4. Click Next : Starting Document (Right lower bottom of the word doc - Step 1 to 6 )

5. Select Starting Document

5a. Use the current document : Use the current content for sending

5b . Start from a Template : Use predefined Template

5c. Start from Existing Document : Use the existing document which was saved earlier.

in my case I select, USE THE CURRENT DOCUMENT where I have my own content.

7. Next : Select Recipients

8. Select Receipents :

8a. Use an existing list : Use the existing excel or access list (Globally, outlook + Gmail+Yahoo etc)

8b. Select from outlook contacts : send mails to the contacts available in outlook only

8c. Type a new list : enter your own list.

In my case I have taken USE AN EXISTING LIST, which I have the contact email details saved in excel and saved on the computer.

9. Use an existing list : Browse the location of the existing access or excel file for email contacts, a window will open once you upload the sheet saying that the SHEET to be selected. After that another window of recipients will be opened to recheck the email ids present

10. Next Write your email message : Edit the content of the message

11. Preview the message: before shooting mails, have a look at your mail merge

12.Complete the mail merge.

Hope this would help you understand the process of sending mails to others using mail merge.

Like wise, you can print Envelops, Labels and Letters using mail merge
