Your specs. are just fine for running Ubuntu 9.04 however your PC will struggle to run Vista with that amount of RAM plus a P4 is a little on the light side for Vista as well

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 7 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.04 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 7 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 7 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

ALSO WORTH CONSIDERING LINUX MINT 6

Linux is not a memory hog like windows is

Vista needs 1 gig of ram minimum to install

Linux will run on 128 Meg of ram, you have enough with 768 Meg of ram to run Linux Ubuntu 9.4 is not the one you want to install the ones you need to download are :-

Dream Linux

Puppy Linux

Xubuntu .... I have installed Xubuntu on a 1999 566 Dell with 128 meg of ram it's not supper fast but fast enough and everything works well on it, you having more memory it will run faster

Minimum system requirements for Xubuntu

You need 192 MB RAM to run the Live CD or 128 MB RAM to install. The Alternate Install CD only requires you to have 64 MB RAM at install time. To install Xubuntu, you need 1.5 GB of free space on your hard disk. Once installed, Xubuntu can run with starting from 192 (or even just 128) MB RAM, but it is strongly recommended to have at least 256 MB RAM.
