The main part of your question has already been answered. As for Ubuntu I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 LTS and Linux Mint 10 Main Edition which are built upon Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Long Term Support) and Ubuntu 10.10 they are easy to install and easy to use plus they come with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 LTS or Linux Mint 10 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 9 LTS and Linux Mint 10 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive

Ubuntu is the main distro, I am using it at the moment and think its marvelous!

Xubuntu, Kubuntu and Edubuntu are all different versions of the Ubuntu OS.

Kubuntu uses the KDE interface, and to me looks similar to windows 7 in the graphical effects and looks department - NOT layout.

Xubuntu uses XFCE interface. Haven't personally used it.

Ubuntu uses the GNOME interface. I think they have done well with it personally, however it is not complete without Compiz Fuzion, an eye candy addon type application.

Edubuntu is really for educational departments such as schools, however I do not know how much it is used because schools prefer windows - however Russian law says you are not allowed to use microsoft products :P

Maybe Russian schools use Edubuntu?

Anyway I think that Ubuntu is the best however I have really only used Ubuntu properly. I have used Kubuntu and do not personally like it in all, however of course there are some things they could come together on and make an orgraphsmic (graphically orgasmic) OS.

Google Images would be the place I would start, if I were you and have a look at the interface. It contributes tremendously to a happy user :D

From there, I would download Ubuntu and virtualise it on your current system using Virtualbox. If you do not like Ubuntu, try Kubuntu and Xubuntu and even Edubuntu to your liking. Fiddle around and break stuff, its fun and thats how you learn :D

Other distros you may look into are:

Ubuntu Studio

MythBuntu

First of all, Linux is not an OS, it is a kernel. A kernel is the core part of an operating system. Kernel of Windows is known as NT, kernel of Mac is known as XNU. Linux is like NT or XNU. Kernel is the fundamental base of every operating system. NT is the fundamental base of Windows XP, Vista and 7. And XNU is the fundamental base of MacOS. Like NT and XNU, Linux is also the base of many Operating systems. Among them Ubuntu is the most popular and widely used.

Secondly, Ubuntu, Fedora, Suse etc are different OS based on Linux. Kubuntu,Xubuntu,Edubuntu are the variations of Ubuntu. Ubuntu is the main OS. The difference between them is the interface (or desktop environment). Ubuntu uses the GNOME interface, Kubuntu uses the KDE interface, Xubuntu uses XFCE interface.

If you need more information or discussion, then ask the question in a more appropriate place, like ubuntu forum.

all of the names are variations of a single distribution of linux, Ubuntu. Ubuntu and Kubuntu simply use different desktop graphics (Desktop Environment), Xubuntu is for older computers, Edubuntu is for Schools.

KDE 4.2 launched on January 27, 2009. That's when KDE started to look kind of like Windows 7, or should I say Windows 7 borrowed some design ideas from KDE. That's okay though, I'm not hating.

Windows 7 launched on July 22, 2009.

*******************************

Moving on, in the Linux world users are not stuck with a single type of desktop environment like they are on Mac/Windows. Some of the most popular desktops environments are GNOME, KDE and Xfce.

Ubuntu uses GNOME

Kubuntu uses KDE

Xubuntu uses Xfce

and Edubutnu uses GNOME, like Ubuntu, but it comes with educational software pre-installed. The target audiences for Edubuntu are schools and young children.

************************

Linux is about choice. Which one is best for you depends on what you like. I suggest reading up on each desktop environment and trying out Linux distributions with each type of environment.

By they way, each desktop environment has themes you can download to customize them. So you're not stuck with the default look. Some people have manage to get GNOME to look exactly like OS X and others have manage to make it look like Windows 7. With all the themes you can pretty much make each desktop environment look like whatever you want.

crimson Hat is the "industry nicely-known" in simple terms because of the fact they say they're. in case you like style call crimson Hat you have gotten tro fork over some money (not many). even even though it has NO income over say Fedora it is crimson Hat in simple terms dazzling open source. you are able to acquire an ISO image if very just about each and all of the Linuxes from their respective web content. in case you fairly opt to learn your $#!7.. Do an entire on source build Gentoo deploy. Heck in simple terms getting put in is worth putting on your resume. Gentoo is deep and grimy Linux. Anpther less complicated to place in yet in simple terms as relaxing to run Linux may be Ubuntu JEOS server. that provides you a Kernel, a terminal (BASH) apt bypass you are able to deploy issues and Vi so which you would be able to edit text cloth medical doctors. it is it. each and everything else is as much as you.
