Upgrade Program Description

To be eligible for the DellTM Windows® 7 Upgrade Option program, you must purchase a Dell system between June 26, 2009 and December 31, 2009 that meets the following criteria:

* Your system must have one of the following operating systems Windows Vista® Home Premium, Windows Vista® Business, or Windows Vista® Ultimate factory installed OR have Windows XP pre-installed with Windows Vista Business Bonus, or Windows Vista Ultimate Bonus.
* The system must be included in the list of Eligible Systems for an upgrade.

The upgrade version received will be comparable to the version of Vista already purchased. See the table below for details. Requirements subject to change and are based on currently available information from Microsoft.

Please note: if your system is operating Windows XP, to upgrade to Windows 7 you must first make backup copies of all files currently on your hard drive. A clean installation of the Windows 7 operating system is required, and so the DVD provided as part of your upgrade kit will overwrite all remaining data on your hard drive. Dell is not responsible for any data lost during the upgrade process.

The only thing you can do is ring them up again and explain. I would also say it all revolves around the date on the cheque and when it clears, because they wont dispatch it until it does clear.

If the date on the cheque is the 23rd then you have ordered it before the offer comes into operation. If it's post dated after the 26th then you have ordered after the offer starts.

It looks like only the Inspiron 14 & 15 are likely to qualify. You may not have even ordered something that's eligible now.

They have to pick some kind of cutoff date for the offer, and the 26th was out there for several months as a rumor if you'd looked around first. There's always going to be someone who orders right before it takes effect though.

If you're eligible, they're supposed to send some kind of coupon/code with your order that you'd use later. Given your computer is assumably not shipping until after the 26th, I'd expect you're likely to get whatever extra paper they simply start tossing in the boxes on that day (or however they do it), and that you don't need to worry.

Anyway, you're either going to get it or you're not. And if you don't, hopefully you can get your order in time where you can still grab the excellent upgrade deal that's out there anyway right now for those buying it separately. I think that's just through July 11 or while supplies last, whichever is first. It's not worth it to hassle Dell and send it back and reship and all that.

It looks like Dell has some website for registering for the upgrade, too:

If they do it the same as other manufacturers, there's a page you have to go to to give them your information (model of the computer, purchase daye, your name and address, etc.) Then they'll send you the update (probably a CD). (They may require a copy or scan of the receipt mailed or emailed.)
