How do you transfer windows xp os on an old computer to a newly built computer?
I have the OS registration number..is that the same as the serial number? If so, How would I go about installing windows xp on this newly built machine?

XP Professional what?

Is it on a home built computer?

Is it on a Dell or some other name brand?

Need more info.......... you didn't tell us enough.

If its a name brand with OEM XP then for the most part you can't use it on another comp... its locked to the motherboard models they issued.

If its XP that you bought or that came with a generic computer then you can "find" an XP Pro CD to match (bit-torrent), install it... use the serial key off the sticker....it will load but it wont register because you changed the hardware....it will prompt you to call up Microsoft after the reg fails........ say "my motherboard fried, this is a replacement one", and the indian dude on the other end will give you an updated serial.

The setup key is five groups of five characters.

Where did you get that copy of Windows? In general Windows that comes with a computer is valid only for the hardware it comes with. So you might need to buy a new copy of Windows anyhow.

Back up xp

Store the back up copy on mem stick

Set up xp on new pc

Restore back up by adding back up to appropriate map on new c:

Hope your new pc doesn't have 7 or vista because xp requires fat32 which is not supported by 7 or vista and is not down gradable like it is not possible to reformat your pc from fat32 to fat16
