What should I convert my MPEG movie files to?

Hi. I have some mpeg video files which I would like to edit on final cut pro. Unfortunately, you can't really edit mpegs on final cut pro (I've tried and there was no sound). So, I installed some video converter software to convert them into mov files.

HOWEVER, after I converted them the video quality was very poor and the screen was a different shape. How can I convert these to a format I can use on Final Cut Pro without compromising their quality or shape?
