I have Windows XP somewhere sleeping in the back ground on my computer.Dell Inspiron 531/ 32 bit duel core!! and the previous owner added Windows Vista 6.0 the cost was low for me but being I am a new to the computer so I wanted to install windows 8.!! I did !!!! IT DID NOT OVER WRITE AND IT EVIDENTLY WENT (SOMEWHERE) ??? MY HARD DRIVE IS FULL AND NOW I WOULD LIKE TO REMOVE THIS!!! I now have to click on F-1 to boot and type in my pass word. It does tell me that (Sata 0) DISK Failure On this it list's the following.WDC-WD-500AAJS-75vwa scsi disk device!!!!!!! Sata 1 list's the following : C:\Windows\System32\drivers\partmgr.sys (Question IS sata 0 contain the Windows 8 I down loaded ?) IF SO HOW DO I REMOVE OF FORMAT THIS DRIVE. i DO NOT HAVE ANY DISKS FOR WINDOWS 6, BUT DO HAVE DISKS FOR WINDOWS X-P !!!! (QUESTION 2) WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO FORMAT AND RE-INSTALL WINDOWS X-P. AND AM HOPING THAT THIS WILL OVER RIGHT MY WINDOWS 6.!! OF COURSE I CAN GET ON LINE AND get to all web sights and mail.but many of the changes respective to other items I get error messages that will not allow changes. I would hope this change would remove this I could take it to be corrected to an expert. BUT then I want to learn something in the process and would rather rely on answers as there is a whole lot of sharp people out there in Yahoo Land Thank You all for your assist. NOTE I know I goofed badly after I read the above answers but I did copy that info and will await an answer for this before going futher Thanks again Geno

Yes, find partitioning software like something on Snapfiles.com. You don't have to go out and buy software, some of the packages on snapfiles are just as good as the paid ones. Sometimes the publishers use the free sites to roll-out their product for real-world testing. If they find it is good enough, they fix any bugs, maybe enhance it and start selling it. I have used a number of free downloads on snapfiles for years and never had a problem with them. Anyone that says snapfiles is junk either doesn't know much and/or just wants to hear themselves in print. Remember the old adage that just because someone says a product is crap doesn't mean they even know how to use it. We tend to think that people reviewing anything know what they are talking about and that is not always true.

The simplest (and best) way is to install a second Hardrive in your system.
If you have XP already loaded and are installing Win 7 it will detect XP and give you a "Boot Manager" option.
If you have Win 7 just install XP to the second drive and use the Boot manager option that appears on the system start up menu... DEL to enter BIOS etc. (usually one of the "F" keys).
Another option is to download the Microsoft virtual PC software (free from Microsoft) which includes a free copy of XP.
Remember that you will need a complete set of drivers for the second OS and if you are installing XP onto a SATA hard drive you will need to set that drive to "Native IDE" in the BIOS.
Once XP has installed completely load the AHCI (SATA) drivers for your motherboard and then reset the drive to AHCI in the Bios. XP should then detect them on the next "boot"

You can.
Step 1: Create a New Partition. step1: The first thing we need to do is create a new partition on the Windows 7 machine. ...
Step 2: Install XP on the New Partition. *Note*: you will need a xp install disk. ...
Step 3: Create Boot Loader. ...
Step 4: Enjoy.

Question is why would you want to use/keep an obsolete operating system on your computer that is virtually unprotected?? They no longer have security fixes for XP and your system is an open target

yes you can use virtual box to create a virtual drive on your harddisk(Without partitioning or formatting) the install XP or 7 to it. Or you can use DUALBOOT method. Here it is deal with partitioning and formatting.
But you need to install older os as main os(C: drive shoul contain Xp and you can install win 7 to another drive)
