After a few weeks of research... I've come up of 3 programs that seem to be the "best" in that class; but in all technicality, which one is "better"?

Video players
- VLC media player
- GOM Media Player
- Zoom Player

Codec Packs
- K-Lite Codec Pack Basic
- Matroska Pack
- XP Codec Pack

Mplayer is by far better for both, in fact VLC will use Mplayer at times in a Linux machine when it can't play something.

Mplayer is the maker of ffmpeg codecs. Nuff said if you know anything about codecs. It even comes with mencoder, nothing beats when you want to rip video.

A couple of years I used Zoom Player. I had th pro and liked it, because you could indeed zoom in the scene while movie was running.

I do not know why I stopped using it.

YOu have done a good research, because VLC player an Gomplayer are the best players at the moment.

Both are free and both can play all file types, without having to download other codec packs. like K-Lite Codec Pack

I use the Gomplayer, because I found it easier to use.

Just go to preferences -- Others --- select

All File Types Codec

nice feature. right click on player for menu. there you see

Control Panel (F7)_

Click CP or hit F7. You can nowl make nice pictures (creen captures) of the movie, video you are watching

Why bother downloading codecs if the file plays on VLC? What's the video format? Maybe it's a file format and not codec issue.
