the best of all,Open Office writer.i mean openoffice.org which is a full office suite plus pdf export option too.

also,in microsoft office2003 et al u can download a plugin which allows exporting files as pdfs.enjoy!

i personally like to use the free trial version of the Adobe software.... it only lasts for 30 days, but for me at least, that's all I usually need it for. You can always go re-trial it with a different email address in the future if you need to.
