Question:
Convert Vob to AVI with no quality loss?

I have a ton of home movies on little DV cassette tapes, and I'm trying to upload them to my computer so that I can edit them and then save them to DVDs.

As I was going through my tapes, I found one where the tape has snapped. It contains most of 2004, the toddler years for my oldest son. I did some digging and found that, at one point, I had copied that tape onto a DVD (unedited), but that DVD contains VOB files - which I'm having trouble getting the editing program to accept.

Is there a way to convert the VOB file to AVI without losing quality? I want to be able to watch these home videos on our DVD player when I'm done. Alternatively, does anyone know how to splice the old cassette tape so that I can recover the majority of the video? Or any other suggestions for me?

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I don't know if you're still reading this but I'll add a few things you can do.

For the tape, this might sound crazy but did you try regular transparent (aka Scotch) tape? I mean, take a piece of tape, put in on a table sticky side up, pull some of the video tape out, lay the ends together on the sticky tape and fold over. That area won't work but it's better than losing all of it. Make sure you don't accidentally twist the video tape!

Yes, you can convert vob (which is mpeg-2) to avi with no quality loss if you use a lossless codec like Huffyuv or Lagarith. The file size will be pretty huge but not as huge as uncompressed video. You can also edit mpeg-2 files directly with something like Cuttermaran or Mpg2cut2. They're both pretty no-frills, just simple cutting. Cuttermaran requires the input be de-multiplexed into separate audio and video files. It doesn't always come out perfectly since this format wasn't really made for editing. You usually have to cut on keyframes (compressed frames that don't depend on what comes before or after). Cuttermaran will let you cut anywhere if you're ok with re-encoding the part up to the next keyframe.

If you have a lot to hard drive space it's probably easier to convert to Lagarith and open it in your regular editing program. You'll have to install the Lagarith codec first ( http://lags.leetcode.net/codec.html ). You can convert your file with something like Virtualdubmod ( http://www.videohelp.com/tools/VirtualdubMOD ). Open your video, go to video->fast recompress. Then video->compression... Pick Lagarith lossless compression, OK. Save your new video.

If Lagarith doesn't work, try Huffyuv ( http://neuron2.net/www.math.berkeley.edu/benrg/huffyuv.html - look for the "pre-built DLL").

Oh, if the audio doesn't work, try saving it again with Virtualdubmod but this time also go to Streams->stream list. Right-click the audio track and pick "full processing mode" this will convert your audio to uncompressed pcm.

Hopefully the tape thing works and you won't have to worry about the rest. :)

If the DV tapes are valuable to you, it might be wise seeking someone locally who can digitally transfer the footage for you and even repair the broken cassette.

If the DVD is unencrypted then you can convert the .VOB files to MPEG-2 format or any other format you require for editing eg .WMV

AVI is a container into which video and audio streams go - converting VOB to AVI will always result in a loss of quality.
