Inkscape, The Gimp and Irfanview image editing software. I wish the Gimp was a little more like Photoshop; its got all the same tools but its just not as easy to learn and doesn't support printing.
Avast anti virus, Ewido anti trojan, Winpatrol, Ad-Aware SE Personal security software. Zone alarm and Kerio personal firewall.
Audacity recording tool and converter.

Firefox (the one I use the most)
Thunderbird
MailScanner / Spamassassin / ClamAV (OK, so I'm a nerd)
Nagios (I monitor over 150 servers with it at work)
The GIMP
Wireshark
Linux (various flavours)
OpenOffice
Avast! Antivirus and more recently AOL's Active Virus Shield (the best of the free AVs)
How can they be improved? Well, they all are under continual improvement, and the new versions cost the same as the old ones, so there's no disincentive to upgrading.

PORTABLE Open Office. and PORTABLE Firefox. They are the same as regular OO and FF, BUT they've been modified to fit on and run from a 256 meg flash drive WITHOUT installation onto the host computer!
I've got them and key documents on a 512 meg flashdrive that hangs from my keychain. Where ever I go, I'm never without important tools and files.
All sorts of great apps have been converted to Portable status including GIMP, 7Zip, Filezilla, sodoku, and Sunbird. and Thunderbird. You can find them for FREE at:

Open Office, because it does everything that Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint do but costs nothing.

Eraser 5.8 - allows complete destruction of files and hard drives.
The software is perfect for what it does - no changes are necessary.
