Its all subjective. But the basic consensus is:

Windows for gaming

OSX for creative arts

Linux for programing

I switched from Windows to linux and have never looked back. For me, linux is the best. No more activation hassles, no more blue screens, no more bloated and over priced software.

But in the end, "best" is whatever works best for you.

Linux has become a serious contender for the desktop. Installation is now something the novice can do. OpenOffice and LIbreOffice can replace Microsoft (bloated and overpriced) Office. Development tools are there, and most games work just fine under Linux.

Windows is good for games, as a lot of games don't work under Linux. Other than that I have no use for windows anymore. I have no intention of ever using Windows 8, and I didn't really like Windows 7 or Vista. Microsoft got it right with XP, and Windows has gone downhill since.

Well, firstly, it's definitely not linux. No offence intended, but linux does seem to always be the bridesmaid, never the bride. Most people switch from Windows to linux, and then re-install windows in a few weeks. This is due to incompatibility of software, which even Wine can't solve. Windows, in my opinion is the best, unless you talking about Windows 8.

None. A computer is simply a tool. Which tool is best depends upon the individual and the job. Windows has traditionally been seen as superior for gaming, but this is changing and may not be close to true in a few years, thanks to Windows 8 - more game makers, especially Valve, are porting games to both Linux and Mac OS now. Windows has also traditionally been seen as superior for the corporate environment. This also may change thanks to Windows 8. Linux is best for programming, and is more than capable of basic tasks for average users. Mac OS has traditionally been seen as superior for audio, video and graphics work.

Linux for the more advanced computer user. If you are as dumb as rocks, go with Windows. Macintosh is too damn expensive.

For new users I recommend Windows. It's much easier and can be installed in any pc unlike Mac. Remove Linux for your choices till you get a degree in computing.

if you want to program and want pc in your way, control fully then linux suits much.

Else you want graphical boxes and dont want to waste time in doing and some games and if u use much programs the windows suits you best.

almost 90% of the worlds PC's are running in windows.

People who really concerns about virus & security will go for LINUX only. Especially Ubuntu flavor.

It is more secured & anti-virus OS

For those who really like GUI (User interface) will go for windows.

It will depend upon what you want to do with it and on what hardware you wish to run it.
