I currently have Norton Internet Security 2003 on my XP. My subscription in running out soon. My question is should I renew it or upgrade? i really don't want to spend the extra $ for the upgrade and the renew price is pretty good. All I read about is that the 2007 is a resource hog. If I leave 2003 on, is that still sufficient?

if you renew is sufficient because newer version means more ram i mean your computer will also run more slow norton 2003 has all features that is required for security you can update your norton intrernet security after renewal

Zone alarm has a free version if you are interested it is a good firewall

You should just buy the software of Norton 2007 in a store. It can be cheaper, safer, and easier. When you upgrade it or renew it through the internet it can cost more and if it downloads wrong you will have to pay for the download again. Also, if you keep the 2003 it can start messing up your computer. Buy the software at Fry's they usually have it on sale and it comes with everything, antvirus, antispam, internet protection, etc. You can probably get it for $80 or less if its on sale.

P.S. In my opinion you should get AVG antivirus, its easier and it won't expire. It does the upgrades itself and it has actually removed the rojan hore virus from my computer while Nortan just told me i had it instead of removing it. Also it is a lot cheaper than Norton and it also come with the antispam and etc.

So you have two obvious options:

A.) Renew

B.) Upgrade

Can I suggest option C?

Move out of using Norton and use a few separate programs to cover all (and more) of what Norton does.

Did I mention you can do this for no cost?

Viruses and spyware tend to go hand in hand:

Anti-virus:

AVG - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free

or

ClamWin - http://www.clamwin.com/

Only install one at a time.

Note: McCaffee and Norton are huge for what they do - they take up a lot of resources, etc. The specialized programs take up less.

Viruses:

Spybot Search & Destroy - http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html

Make sure to do the "Immunize" part too!

While we're cleaning up your computer, grab:

Ccleaner - it finds the crud in your computer and cleans it out (history files, shortcuts that don't go anywhere, missing file associations, etc) - http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

And everyone needs a firewall. The one with Windows just doesn't cut it anymore.

Zonealarm (free) - http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

All of these programs are free, virus and spyware free and highly rated.

Oh, and if you're finding viruses / spyware and you don't do P2P (file sharing), it's probably Internet Explorer letting them in.

Move to using Firefox (http://www.firefox.com/) - it blocks pop-ups, is faster, safer, more secure. It has tabs and the real secret to Firefox's awesomeness?

The add-ons.

With a small add-on you can block ads. Flash ads, banner ads, iframe ads... The internet looks quite different without all those ugly ads!

Adblock Plus - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1865/

With a small add-on you can block a security hole that affects all browsers - until now. It's called XSS or cross-site scripting. It can be used to steal your passwords, mess up your browser, etc.

NoScript - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/722/

There are lots more... Feel free to ask me questions by clicking on my name and sending me an e-mail.

Uninstall Norton and all Norton products.

Install AVG FREE or AVAST FREE for anti virus,

Install AD-Aware 2007 and Spy Bot Search and Destroy 1.4 for Spy Ware.

Ad-aware and spy bot will not do anything automatically, you have to manually update them and run the scans. but there free.

no it will be outdated and you will not receive updates, 2003 is old, the new versions will protect your computer 100 percent more, lots of new features to protect from all the newest threats. You get what you pay for, better than crashing your computer.
