Question:
windows "system32" file missing?
2009-03-11 09:16:27 UTC
I have two computers with Windows XP. I needed to change a file on both computers in the c:/Windows/system32 directory, but on one of my computers "system32" isn't even there. Windows works perfectly. System files are not hidden. I did a "search" for the whole windows directory and it came up with nothing.

My question is...
Where the hell is it???

The directory has to be there because all of the key system files are there. If you are using windows explorer it may not be visible depending on options.

Go to start | run and type %windir%\system32. That will bring up the folder in explorer.

Click Start > Run > type %SYSTEMROOT% and press enter.

This will take you to inside where the 'Windows' folder is on that PC. The Windows folder is not guaranteed to be on C: drive but System32 should be located in this directory.

Typing %SYSTEMROOT%\system32 will take you to inside the system32 folder.

Was the PC in question an upgrade from a previous version of Windows?
