My grandmother is 74. She can't see really well and has never turned on a computer let alone tried to use one. I want her set her up with a computer so she can look up recipes and email her family and friends. All she needs is a no frills, extremely simple operating system that only runs a web browser or is very easy to start up.

A perfect example of an os that I want is google chromium. If you don't know, it's an ultra light os that only boots up into google chrome. But, it's not released yet.

I then thought about ubuntu and fedora, but shortly afterwords I relized that they are both too complicated and have too many extras that she will never use.

I'm stumped. What os is extremely easy, boots into a web browser, and is free?

Please Help me and my grandmother!

If that doesn't exist yet, can you guys please give me the name of the most user friendly and simplest linux?

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon the outstanding Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 8 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 8 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

Linux was once made mainly with older machines in brain. 32mbs of ram is REALLY reducing it skinny with Ubuntu. They assume you to have no less than sixty four-128mbs as a advice. In reality, I simply did a rapid appear at probably the most "gentle weight" types, they advocate 128 mbs of ram. What was once the mistake specifcally? Though you'll be able to get it to run on 32mbs of ram, it's going to be VEEEERY sluggish. Send me a message or electronic mail and I'll support you out when you consider that I run Ubuntu.

Try Kubuntu.

Install Firefox and Flash for her and then place the icon on a plasma widget called "Folder View." Increase the amount of zoom in the folder view and lock the widgets. All she will have is one large icon on the screen. To make it even easier for her, you can also add a widget called "Lock/Logout" Disable the Lock feature and all that is left is the logout button; when she wants to shutdown the computer she just has to click the red button and select "Turn Off Computer."
