Hi, (Here's the part where I go on a long story explaining exactly where scenario the question is being asked for. Only later to make a paragraph break summing up the question :) ) Recently (er a few months ago) I got a really nice laptop and wanted to protect it so I backed it up on a external hard drive I barley used. hrmmm I suddenly realize as much as I am enjoying telling this story it really doesn't help. Anyhow long story short I realize how important backups and data redundancy are and want to start doing it for my systems. I thought that a way to put as much back up data on one backup drive would be to compress the files. I then learned that there where to concepts in compressing (or zipping) now much loss there is and how much compression.
Backups are important so of course I want loss less. (is there a better term for that?)

So to sum it up (told you so :) ) what form of loss-less file compression gives me the most compression for a backup (containing files from text to video)

What program are you using to backup your computer? If you're using Windows backup (the backup software the comes with Windows) you don't need to worry about compression because Windows backup compresses compressible files (file types that are not already compressed, ex: .txt) to an optimal/maximum level of compression. Already compressed file formats like .zip, .jpeg are not attempted to be compressed further. There is no provision for the user to specify the compression level to be applied, it compresses for you without asking you. Hope this clarifies.

i do no longer understand precisely what you're speaking approximately yet once you're asking which takes up the smallest volume of room that's a MP3 report, FLAC's take in approximately 4 situations as lots area as an mp3.
