If the HD is broken it is amazing that Ubuntu ran as long as it did. You were slowly killing your computer more each time you used it. What you need to do now is see if Acer will fix the HD for you (contact their support for details). You can verify that the HD is pooched by running Ubuntu from a LiveCD. Plug a USB CD/DVD drive into your Acer (or have a Ubuntu LiveUSB handy) and insert the LiveCD into the drive. Reboot your computer and make sure it boots from the CD/DVD drive first (if it won't you will have to check your laptop's manual on how to get into the BIOS and change the boot order so that the USB is ahead of the HD). If the computer can boot into the LiveCD that means your hardware is fine. You may see your HD. If you see your HD try to go into it (ie mount it). If you can do this, then you should save all the folders under the /home folder to an external USB drive. If you can't see your HD or when you try to mount it, it fails, then it is pooched and it needs to be replaced.

Hard drives are cheap. Just get a new one and re-install Ubuntu.
