Windows 7 file search doesn't work?

I've been using Windows 7 for about 18 months. Its file search never worked well for me, but starting about a week ago, it doesn't work at all. I can open a folder and see the files in it, then search for an exact file name (that I KNOW is there), part of the file name "name:filename", whatever, and I get absolutely nothing back. I have tried using Start / Control Panel / Programs / Turn Windows features on or off

to turn search capability off and then on again, but that didn't help.

I am beyond frustrated. My feeling is that Microsoft has created a hard-to-understand, completely non-intuitive interface that an average user has no way to fix. I thought previous versions of search were inadequate, but at least they were usable and consistent. This one has been nothing but trouble.

If anyone can provide a step-by-step solution or a pointer to something understandable, I would appreciate it.

was it allright when you first installed the windows? If so then try uninstalling the latest updates. Once i had same problem in vista. I blew off all the installed updates updates and the it was back to normal. thank you

if you look in your pictures library you can search all pictures there. also if you just click on the computer tab on the left side of the window you can use the search box that says "search computer" to search your whole system
