There isn't one. Most computers slow down because of the number and type of applications and services that are running and only you can determine that. Take a look at the lower right of your screen - I should imagine there are a lot more utilities running now than when the machine was new and fast.

You may have too many programs starting when you boot the computer - these use memory and can slow your computer down. At a command prompt, or the run command, just type msconfig

This brings up a dialog box showing all the programs that start when your computer boots. Just uncheck the ones you don't want to start. Be careful when you do this and only uncheck those you know you don't need as some of those are system tools.

It could be your hard drive is getting full. A rule of thumb is to keep at least 10 - 15% of free disk space. If yours is near that it's time to think about moving your files to another drive or CD/DVD. Under 85% full, it usually doesn't matter how full your drive is, it shouldn't slow your computer down - it's storage space and not actively used until you run a program.

Another way of clearing some space off your drive is to use the clean up utilities - Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools to delete old log and temporary files. Utilities like Ccleaner - http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner - do much the same job but with a prettier interface.

You need to check your anti-virus is up-to-date. Download MBAM free edition - http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free and do a full scan. This may take a while but will find anything nasty your normal AV program missed.

Make sure your drivers are up-to-date. Open Device Manager and update the drivers.

You could also try defragging your drive and cleaning the registry - Ccleaner has a registry cleaner - but unless your computer is seriously messed up you won't see much of a difference. The use of defragging and registry cleaning is debatable. Lots of people say it helps, some people say it doesn't but very little in the way of proof either way.

Another way is to edit the services that start when your computer boots. I supposed this comes under "advanced", and you need to be careful as turning the wrong thing on or off can seriously screw your computer up.

http://www.blackviper.com/category/guides/ - a very good site

One way to speed up almost any computer is to add more memory. http://www.crucial.com/ has a good tool for showing what RAM you've got fitted and how much your motherboard can actually use.

Of course, you could ignore all of the above and simply backup your files and reinstall everything, including your operating system.

Hello. My name is Sanjay Patel, and I currently hold an honorary Master's degree in the field of Computer Science. I am aware of, and have personal knowledge related to your question. There are computer repair businesses which are probably in your area, however they come at the cost of hiring a professional to enter your home. There may also be some local destinations where you can drop off your computer and wait to have a technician look at it. These options can often be costly, and pretty inconvenient. The answer to this question can probably be found doing a little extra research on Google.

A well-running computer can be a hard thing to maintain. From my experience, there is but only One software which is reputable, and consistently reliable for healing sick computers. Reimageā„¢ - https://reimagefix.im is a world-renown, easy to use software designed by Forensic scientists and made for the average person. This thing will fix literally just about ANY problem you could possibly be having with your PC. Reimage was recommended to me by a Professor during my 2nd year of Graduate school.

I am a professional developer with Microsoft, and have about 10 years of experience in the field of Computer Engineering. Most problems with PC's are the result of malicious software that infected a Computer. Examples of this are things such as malware, viruses, trojans, spyware, adware, root kits, and worms. In other cases, they are the result of stability issues due to crashes, freezes, or Hardware Issues. Some examples of hardware issues could be a dirty cooling fan causing the computer to overheat, or low memory due to lack of RAM, which could cause the PC to run slowly. You may think it could be a virus, or malware, or registry issues, but it could be something else entirely. As a computer layman, one may find it hard to really ascertain what exactly is causing the problems, without having a professional do an in depth analysis of your PC.

As professional computer repairs can be quite costly, I would recommend to you a Software that many of us in the tech department here at Microsoft use personally and professionally to diagnose and repair computer problems very quickly. It is a software called Reimage, from https://tr.im/ReimageRepairs .. In my personal experience, and in the experience of many of my associates, this is probably the best software ever created for those experiencing computer troubles. This is likely to remedy just about ANY problem your computer could possibly be having, and have it running like new. Reimage has won several awards, and been featured in publications such as PC Mag.

I recently was recommended https://reimagefix.im referred to by that Sanjay guy on here and it 100% fixed my computer. I was having all kinds of problems that were totally annoying my girlfriend to death. This computer had viruses, spyware, error messages, hardware problems, and the computer would quite often crash or freeze on us. I think the worst issue to me was how SLOW and laggy it became. So just when I was about to replace with it, and waste money on a new computer...I find this. Good.

There is no "Magic-Bullet App", period. The only tool you need is common sense.

It's almost always: XP (corrupted, not Updated, bad Device Driver), and / or Malware (prime Suspect), and / or 'not enough RAM / hard disk problem'.

Read this, and then, Google search for ("XP slow") for more advice:
