How do I keep IRC active on a sleeping computer (Windows 7)?

I have an HP laptop with Windows 7 as the operating system. I constantly use NetTalk IRC to keep in touch with people. Whenever I go to school, I close the laptop and it goes to sleep. However, when I get back, I find that it hasn't received any information or logs. Shortly after waking up the laptop, the connection times out and I have to log back in. I still need the password prompted on opening the laptop, as there are still people home when I go to school and I'm paranoid about people going through my stuff. I also use a wireless connection if that helps at all. So, to sum it up, is there a way I can keep IRC recording while the computer is in sleep mode?

If the entire computer is sleeping, no. When the entire computer goes into sleep mode, all processing is suspended and system state is saved so that when you wake up your computer, you can continue where you left off without having to go through the boot processes. If you want to continue to receive messages, you need to reconfigure what goes to sleep. For Windows PCs, you can configure this in the Power Options on the Control Panel. Different brands have different OEM utilities that may come into play, but most will allow you to select an option to change when the computer goes to sleep. In your case, you would tell the computer to never sleep but to turn off your monitor after "X" amount of minutes. You should also be able to configure options here as to what happens when you close your monitor lid, press the power button, etc. Be forewarned, if you do this you will lose the ability to close the monitor and throw it in your laptop case for quick transportation since your computer will still be running when the lid is closed. Transporting the computer would require that you specifically tell your computer to go to sleep from the "Shutdown" options, or to completely shut the laptop down.
