Why Linux is Better

http://www.whylinuxisbetter.net/

Overall a Linux based platform can perform most of the tasks equally as well as a proprietary platform using the likes of Ubuntu and its derivative distros. However Linux does have its limitations with some applications and in particular gaming. For example I retain a dedicated Windows partition to run specific applications such as Office 2010 etc.

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 LTS and Linux Mint 10 being easy to install and easy to use plus they comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint 9 LTS and Linux Mint 10 can also be run straight from the LiveDVD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive

Once installed I recommend updating to Firefox 5 as Firefox 3.6 comes as default with both releases

In my opinion there is no better, it's a matter of opinion and how you like it to work. Linux is going down as a PC OS and is going to tap into the tablet/phone market. I own both a Windows Desktop and a MacBook Pro. Personally I think the MacBook Pro is the best laptop out there. I love the trackpad gestures, nice and quick providing nothing too big like adobe master collection and so on is on it. Great for leisure. Although Dell just released a Laptop much the same for Windows 7. Dell XPS15z. Reviewed to be better and $400 less. I prefer my Windows desktop over all. I dunno why, I guess because I grew up with windows. Just have a fiddle with both and see what you like best. Both Windows and Mac have their advantages and disadvantages. But don't believe the rumors that MACs can't have viruses. They can. Hackers before just didn't bother because no one had one. With the rise of the iPhone (Actually Android phones are over selling the iPhone now) they might become more common.

I will give you the cons and pros and a BIAS opinion on the operating systems (latest versions)

Windows - This OS is cheap and covers more than 90% of the market. Most programs are built for it and can do anything for everyday life. It's ideal for gaming, work, internet browsing, watching movies etc. The downside is that it isn't really recommended for music editors, movie writers, editing etc.

Mac - This is ideal for people who create music make movies and all that sort of stuff. It can do almost anything a windows 7 can but it is slower, significantly more expensive and few programs are designed for it. The only good thing is that it has a nice theme but it sure as hell is slower.

Don't bother getting Linux.

Windows XP Professional

Pros:

- Userfriendly

- Very good if you're still using a large amount of legacy apps

Cons:

- Incompatible with most newer technologies

- Cannot make good use of powerful computers, therefore wasting resources

Windows 7 Ultimate

Pros:

- Userfriendly

- Has the largest library of software out of all operating systems

Cons:

- Heavily bloated

- Uses too many resources

Overall Windows advantages:

- Runs games somewhat better, although the other operating systems can do it as well.

Ubuntu 11.04

Pros:

- Userfriendly

- Amazing library of software - just like an iPhone, anything you'd care to do, there's an app for that. Much easier to install things than on Windows.

- Completely modern OS but still runs perfectly on older systems

- Can also run Windows programs and games via a program called 'Wine'

Cons:

- The default interface, GNOME + Unity, sometimes feels lacking and bad, as GNOME is a strange thing - and the GNOME team likes removing features more than adding them.

Kubuntu 11.04

Pros:

- Amazing library of software - just like an iPhone, anything you'd care to do, there's an app for that. Much easier to install things than on Windows.

- Can also run Windows programs and games via a program called 'Wine'

- Amazing userfriendly and powerful interface, which is much better than Windows Vista & 7's Aero Glass.

Cons:

- Cannot run on older systems, provided that the interface requires quite a bit of graphic power to run properly - I'd say the system requirements are equal to Windows 7's, though.

Overall Linux advantages:

- Full customizability. It is the most customizable OS of the bunch!

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

Pros:

- Amazing unique interface - often shows its power.

- Everything works out of the box - awesome suite of applications.

- Perfect for artists and creative people

Cons:

- Small software library

- To run Windows programs, you have to install Windows in a VM-like environment, while on Linux + Wine you can do it without installing Windows.

- It only runs on Macs.

Now, decide by yourself.

If you have Windows apps that do not have replacements for Linux, nor do they function properly on there, go for Windows XP, which is the most compatible of the bunch.

If you want to be a power user, and customizability, performance and quality is your need, use an Ubuntu-based distro.

If you're creative and focus on art, and like things to function like they're intended to without any problems, use OS X.

Hope I helped!

Windows to me... It's all based on what you want...

But I defenetly wouldn't want a linux.

Mac: for the more productive users such as professional applications that require more to run. Word, spread sheet, PowerPoint, hard core editing in film or imaging.

Windows: more fun, more applicable to games. More games do run with Mac now but windows will always have the 1 up in video gaming. Also more customizable and great with making it your own. Like you can change theme, font, size etc.

Personally I have a windows and I love it, and I've also had a Mac before and it was great too!! You just gotta know what you want.

It depends what task you want to do.....generally this is the pros and cons of every OS in the market:

1) Microsoft Windows

Pros:

The largest library of programs and applications.

Some commercial games work only with Windows and DirectX.

Almost all hardware has drivers which are compatible with Windows.

Most widely used.

Cons:

Prone to viruses, spyware, and adware if proper steps not taken such as installation of internet security software, which reduces performance speed.

Requires regular maintenance to avoid system errors and reduced performance.

Even with maintenance, issues can slowly accumulate requiring a re-installation of Windows to restore performance and fix software issues.

Purchasing a Windows license/install disk can be relatively expensive

Windows Vista, the most recent version of Windows, has high system requirements.

2) Mac OS X

Pros:

Relatively simple and intuitive interface with many advanced features.

Not a target for virus or malware attacks, generally: there are no Mac OS X viruses in the wild, and with its UNIX base, it is fairly resilient. There are a small number of trojans (malicious software) which have been known to take effect through applications running in Mac OS X, though they are almost always found on illegal-content-based websites and are not of significant concern. Apple has begun integrating malware blacklists into Mac OS X to prevent infection.

Second-largest selection of software, with many high-quality Mac-only programs in existence, such as those found in iLife. Although at one point software for certain tasks were not Mac-compatible, most software is now either Mac-compatible or has an equivalent that is. Most advanced games have also recently became compatible with Mac OS X.

Reliable and high performance.

Cons:

Limited to Apple-manufactured hardware.

Some hardware does not have Mac-compatible drivers, though the number of this hardware has recently become small and negligible.

In some cases, it may be difficult to do cross-platform network hardware sharing for a Mac OS X based computer in a Windows network or visa-versa. For example, a printer's Mac driver may not support cross-platform printing to a Windows-connected printer, and replacement drivers may or may not exist.

Smaller library of applications in comparison to Windows.

3) Linux and other UNIX-based

Pros:

Low number of viruses and other malware, similar to Mac OS X

Usually free

Large selection of Linux distributions to choose from.

Has a large amount of free and open source software equivalents to commercial Windows and Mac software

More easily customizable

Can run many Windows programs with the use of a compatibility layer such as Wine. (Programs such as Cedega can be used to run many Windows games)

Reliable with good performance and low requirements.

Cons:

Advanced use and installation of some software may require more advanced knowledge than is required for use of Windows and Mac.

Many commercial programs do not support Linux

Small commercial game library

But you can't say the Linux or Mac OS is better from windows (an example) every OS is different form each other and they are designed for different uses and users.

Windows has everything. Linux is ok. Mac is to expensive.

window is for beginners and moderate users, which is fun to use. whereas linux and Mac are more business oriented with more security and lots of advanced features, probably not known to many every day users.
