My mom just recently brought a new computer with Microsoft Office 2007 but it did not include the product key. This computer is Windows XP SP3. How could I find/get the product key because I can't use Microsoft Office without it?

Problem

In order to install or reinstall Microsoft Windows you must have access to a Product Key for that version of the operating system. The product key can typically be found on a yellow sticker on the CD case of the installation CD, or on a small Microsoft sticker on the outside of the PC's case (if the OS came preinstalled on the machine). If you no longer have access to the product key then you will effectively "lose" a Windows license if you ever have to reinstall the operating system.

Solution

There are several methods you can use to uncover a lost product key for a version of Windows that you currently have installed.

For older versions of Windows you can extract the product key from the Windows Registry. Click Start | Run and then type regedit and click OK.

For Windows 95 and Windows 98, browse to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ProductID

For Windows NT 4.0, browse to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProductID

Alternatively, there are also some free scripts and freeware software programs that can help you:

A product Key is a number that comes with a program so that the program knows you didn't copy it off of the internet. With Microsoft Word it lets you use it 20 times before you are absolutely required to enter one. I would contact your computers company for the help. just give them a call and it should be no problem for them to help you. Of course, do this only if you specifically asked for microsoft windows 2007. Otherwise it is just a trial and you need to buy it. But they don't ask for product keys with trials so i am confident they can help you get your key.

The computer came with a trial version. If it came with the full version then you would have install discs with the key.

You can either buy Office 2007, or try Open Office. It's a free, legal office suite with similar functionality. It can read files created in MS Office and save them in the same format.
