I have a computer with Windows Vista installed. When I turn it off, it tries to install updates (there are about 48 of them). It will NOT install them. I've left the computer on for days, and it always hangs on updating... 1 of 48. I have to hold the power button to get it to power off, and this gives my computer speed problems. When I try to install them when the computer's on, it says: Error code 80240016 - Windows update is currently installing other updates. Please try again in a few minutes.

Anyone know what to do to get these updates installed/disabled?

IN THE START MENU, CHOOSE WINDOWS UPDATES TO OPEN A PAGE WHERE YOU CAN SELECT HOW YOU WANT TO HANDLE YOUR UPDATES.. YOU CAN CHOOSE TO HAVE WINDOWS DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THEM AUTOMATICALLY, OR DOWNLOAD THEM AND LET YOU CHOOSE FROM WHICH ONES TO INSTALL, OR NOT TO GET UP DATES AT ALL...

Try restarting the windows update service:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957307

if that not helps u may need to reset the windows update components:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/

PS: if you would have a good system backup, then you would not be dependant of hard to find and implement solutions that may leave you with untidy remnants that may cause bugs later on.

Get boot-it ng (use it myself):

http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/bootit-next-generation.htm

and make an image of your vista-partition. A system-image is like a restorepoint but better, because it's a full backup. There is a dutch saying that goes: prevention is better then healing. (wel maybe it's an english saying also ;-))

Then below homestead windows updates, click examine for updates. If theres no longer something there then i do no longer understand what to tell you, sorry = ( yet you may examine your updates approximately thrice a week. good success = )
