Question:
Debian download and installation?
2010-04-09 12:13:52 UTC
Do I need the 7 or 8 4gb discs that they want me to download? Or is there another way to do this? I don't think I need the 25,000 apps or whatever is included... I just want a terminal and a bit GUI. Thats it. Is there a net cd iso that I can dl instead?

NO. DO NOT DOWNLOAD the full install. My friend did it and it took him TWO WEEKS.

Use either Net-install:

Or a live cd:

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/release/current-live/

You will be downloading it off the net which takes between four and eight hours but that is better than the installation with the disks -- which I wouldn't recommend if you haven't done at least twelve gentoo installs anyhow. You can also, very easily, turn your Windows machine into something beautiful by going to:

http://www.goodbye-microsoft.com

and clicking on the debian logo. Still takes at least three to four hours.

I believe only the first one (or two) are needed to install the full Debian. There is usually a net install too....

There seems to be a 150MB net install CD for i386:

http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.4/i386/iso-cd/debian-504-i386-netinst.iso

Other versions may exist for other architectures:

just grab the debian live cd, its only about 700mb, and you can just download anything you want with apt.
