I've personally done recovery to factory settings on my laptop before but this time I couldn't.

I'm using Toshiba Satellite L755-1009X. Today i did a system recovery to factory setting, i on the laptop & simultaneously pressed zero. I released zero when it continuously beeped. To my surprise, windows started up as if i just on the laptop for normal use. I tried few times n the result was the same. It was the same result for F8.

The instructions for my Toshiba Satellite has this in the User Guide:

Restoring the pre-installed software from the Recovery hard disk

drive

A portion of the total hard disk drive space is configured as a hidden

recovery partition. This partition stores files which can be used to restore

pre-installed software in the event of a problem.

If you subsequently set up your hard disk drive again, do not change,

delete or add partitions in a manner other than specified in the manual,

otherwise you may find that space for the required software is not available.

In addition, if you use a third-party partitioning program to reconfigure the

partitions on your hard disk drive, you may find that it becomes impossible

to setup your computer.

1. Turn off your computer.

2. While holding down 0 (zero) key on the keyboard, turn on your

computer.

3. A menu will be displayed from which you should follow the on-screen

instructions.

System Recovery Options

The System Recovery Options feature is installed on the hard disk when

shipped from the factory. The System Recovery Options menu includes

tools to repair startup problems, run diagnostics or restore the system.

See the Windows Help and Support content for more information about

Startup Repair.

The System Recovery Options can also be run manually to repair

problems.

The procedure is as follows. Follow the instructions shown on the onscreen

menu.

1. Turn off the computer.

2. While holding the F8 key, turn on the computer.

3. The Advanced Boot Options menu will be displayed.

Use the arrow keys to select Repair Your Computer and press

ENTER.

4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

The System Recovery Options feature will be unusable if this partition is

deleted.

The Windows 7 CompletePC Backup feature can be used on Windows® 7

Professional and Windows® 7 Ultimate.

Kelvin: Assuming Vista This will not work if you haven’t a pre installed OS held in a partition. So, you have nothing to lose give it a go. Switch off your pc completely and clear the working area. You’re ready to go: - On switching on “immediately and repeatedly” hit F8 as it runs up, it’ll show/allow you the options, for example “Repair your Computer” select this. Answer a couple other obvious questions but, you’re looking for their top option e.g. “Full Destructive Recovery” this is what you’re after. Don’t be shy, it will ask many more times, “Do you really want to do this” just keep clicking yes please. 1. This course of action will take about ten minutes and if you haven’t saved any files that you might like to have kept its now too late. Remember this will take it back to the day you purchased. So, you can install any subsequent software, printer drivers for example, at a much later date. 2. Sit back and watch while it does its thing…then Bing its back and talking to you, to help you set up your new purchased PC. I suggest you install your (Norton) or some such anti Virus now. You’ll need to update your system; this can be lengthy and very boring and defiantly time consuming. Might I suggest you leave it on connected to your modem while you’re in bed asleep while these updates arrive.

I don`t know about the recovery cds, I imagine that you just boot from the first one then follow instructions. You should be able to do it without the cds following this method. These are instructions specifically for a Toshiba laptop. 1) Hold down the power button for 10 (ten) seconds to switch off your machine. 2) Press and hold the 0 (zero) key and at the same time, tap the power button once to switch on your notebook. 3) When the machine Starts beeping; release the 0 key. 4) When prompted by the warning screen; select Yes to continue with the system recovery. 5) Select Recovery of Factory Default Software; click Next. 6) Select Recover to out-of-box state. Click Next again. 7) Click Next to Start recovery.
