Suppose I set up an auto-responder on my email - for example to say that I'm out of the office for 3 days.

But the person who emails me also has an auto-responderr on their email address.

Would their autoresponder reply to mu auto-responder - could this not set up a loop of infinite emails backwards and forwards?

I am interested to set it up and try it, but don't want to run the risk of overloading my networK!

Typically, autoresponders are smart enough to track messages either on an ID (per msg level) or per email address. This means that you would only be sent an auto-respond at most once per e-mail or once per email address.

Most email systems these days can detect such a loop by storing information about which email address the auto-responder process has sent auto-respond-email to. The process or agent keeps a list of email addresses and checks it before sending your auto-responder message.

However, depending on the email system configuration, the list will get flushed after how many hours or days and the receiver will receive the auto-respond message again.
