In the Linux world as far as distros. are concerned 'one mans meat is a another mans poison'

Many people recognize the impact that Ubuntu has had a dramatic impact as far as usability is concerned whereas others shun Ubuntu, most notably dedicated Debian users http://www.debian.org/

To a certain extent they have a point when you look at it this way, without Debian there would be no Ubuntu and without Ubuntu there would be no Linux Mint

Furthermore you knock Gentoo but without Gentoo the outstanding Sabayon would not exist http://www.sabayonlinux.org/

The true wonder of Linux is the LiveCD you can try as many as you like without commitment. I have Linux 7 and Linux Mint 8 fully installed however occasionally I will have a LIVE session with Fedora, Mandriva etc. etc. etc.

There is no best and no worst. However there is choice and it is up to the individual which they are happy working with most suitable for their needs.

It's funny, but I've stayed within one family group of distros. I am one of those people who think very hard before abandoning hard earned knowledge and taking up a parallel product. I only experimented once outside the group and was frustrated with rpm after using apt-get. I am sure that had I started with the other one, there is a good chance I may have stuck with it.

Gentoo, T-2, Sorcerer are special distos. They sound like a lot of fun, but I feel I've gotten enough of that experience by compiling a kernel or two and one or two apps from source.

I think there is more difference between GNOME and KDE than between Debian and Red Hat.

I agree with piratesmack, above, I have forgotten more about Debian sysvinit than I could learn about BSD init in a few weeks. All that knowledge would be wasted if I were to use BSD.

This attitude kept me from using ATM cards until five more years than most people.

In my opinion, Slackware and Gentoo are the best.

Slackware because it is rock-solid and uses BSD-style init scripts.

Gentoo because of it's awesome package manager (portage) and excellent documentation.

The worst, Debian (and anything Debian-based), because of the way apt handles dependencies.

Again, just my opinion.

EDIT

aww man I love puppy, too.

Gotta add that one to my best list
