I have over 4 thousand DVD titles, and I cant keep them on the disc itself, they are going bad, some wont read anymore and I don't know why. I want to keep a copy of them on and external hard drive, and I was wondering whether I should just copy them on the hard disk as a DVD image, or convert them to DivX? if I do convert them, do I loose a noticeable amount of quality? is it a good idea to save up disc space, or not?

You could convert them. You do lose a little bit of quality, especially if you compress the image down somewhat but the movies are stiff definitely watchable. The only problem is that if you manage to copy all 4000 movies you will need a whole lot of hard drive space in your computer.

If u dont wanna them going bad, copying them to hard drive is a good choice. And few video tools can keep the original quality during conversion. But pavtube dvd ripper is strong performer which can keep the quality.

Saving up disc space means compression, which compression means losing quality.

You can just store the DVD disc as ISO files on your external hard drive to save space. ISO files include all the data of files contained on the archived CD/DVD.

To make ISO files playable on computer, you might need DAEMON Tools Lite. It enables you to run the ISO files directly on your hard drive by emulating virtual drives on your PC.

Or you can convert ISO to AVI for playing on Windows Media Player.

For the step-by-step guide of how to convert ISO to AVI, you can refer to http://www.aimersoft.com/tutorial/convert-iso-to-avi.html
