Question:
Ubuntu-Compiz failure?
?

I was messing around with my new 11.04 Natty Beta when I decided to change a few things on my Compiz. Idecided to enable my dektop cube, disabled Unity support (which I've done before without problems) so I could temporarily fix a few of the conflicts. All of a sudden, my launchers and panels re gone, so I 'switch user' then it logs me out. I tried logging into it again with the same problems. I switche the user AGAIN (fruitlessly) trying to log out and back in to the GNOME environment. I did so, but my panels were missing now, too. I tried doing a fresh restart but it took me straight to Unity (which also no longer worked.) How do I fix this? I'm writing a book and ALL of the files are on there...

EDIT: My laptop is set up to log into Unity by itself.

When you login I suggest opting for 'classic ubuntu desktop' as there are known issues with Compiz whilst working in Unity

Do you, by any chance, have a stable Ubuntu release, or anything really, on another partition that you could access the files with? If not, I suppose you could look for instructions on how to mount a USB and transfer files through a text terminal, and move the book onto a USB.

And why would you save important files into a computer running an unstable release!?

You are using a BETA release as your main everyday operating system? You are just asking for trouble by doing this.

Beta releases are not meant to be used in a production machine. They are for testing only. The final release will not be available until the end of this month.

You should ask this question in Ubuntu Forums, under Testing and Development.
