If your antivirus software suddenly starts detecting "many" viruses after an update then the most likely cause is that the AV provider has released a faulty virus definitions update. All antivirus vendors have managed to have this problem at least once. It happened to me a couple of times using different AV solutions including Avast, AVG and Avira.

The answer is to stop the scan immediately if multiple viruses are detected then use other methods to scan the files to determine if it's a false positive detection issue. Disable your AV program then wait for the next update. Restore all files from the vault.
If you computer is screwed - try booting in safe mode then attempt a system restore.
If that doesn't work - reinstall from back up.
If you don't have a back up - reinstall from scratch.

The joys of freeware? On bootup tap F8 to get into safe mode>select with networking so you can download Malware Bytes>install>update definitions>scan, after scan you will be prompted to restart PC scan again. Freeware has no firewall, hence the abundance of trojans, If you insist on freeware, I suggest Avast free with Zone Alarm free Firewall, or a purchased product. I have been using Norton products for 12 years without a failure. My security is Norton Internet Security 2012 with a purchased version of Malware Bytes in protection mode. You should backup personal data as well, if you value it?

You just had a virus that was in a system file and avast didn't know it was an important file so when it was deleted your computer crashes
Avast 7 Is the latest version use that one it is cloud based so it is smarter and faster and lighter than before

When you ask for Computer help, at least tell us what OS you are using so we don't have to guess.
If you are using Windows 7 or Windows Vista, boot from their installers or System Repair discs and do a startup repair. After repairing, install the latest Avast version 7.0:

Happened to me last week, but I was using AVG, after I formatted it, I re-downloaded AVG, and it crashed the windows again. And I had to reformat again. Don't redownload Avast.
