After I took my Toshiba Satellite to get "fixed" dvd's stopped being recognized. I have programs that play dvd's but still the dvd's will not be read on my laptop. Any suggestions? Do I need to get software and where would I get compatible [and possibly free] software at?

Also another problem that arose after getting it fixed is that IE stopped working. That was ok because I can use Mozilla but now I need to download updates that only work through explorer. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling fresh from the internet but that did not work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!

DVD not being recognised .. hmmm ..

Try cleaning the lens with a soft cloth and spirit/alcohol. Dosn't work, there is something wrong with the drive. If you are saying that the movies don't autoplay, you can just click on the drive and choose " Autoplay" from the dropdown. IF you are saying that the Comp can't even read Data DVD's the drive needs to be repaired or may be replaced. Is the Lappie still in Warranty ?

IE not working, download IE 5/IE 6 first and then install it , Restart your system. Then check, if it's working then try an upgrade to IE 7, IE 7 has some compatibility issues with certain XP versions ( and when IE 7 says Restart Now or Restart Later, choose Restart now...

you can use nero, windvd, and others to play dvds. Windows update will automatically download updates for you.
