Upon first use of a NEW or system reset there are W8 - 8.1 → 175+ & W7 250+ updates to download & configure, not to mention the Bloatware installed.
Open Action Center (flag down bottom RH corner beside the clock. "Trust" your copy of Windows. Click on and follow the prompts. MS will text or email you a security code to enter.
Allow 2 – 3 hours for the process to complete. The updates stabilize the OS and many of the programs which are not running up to your expectation will run fluidly.
Go to the Control Panel (Windows key + I) & click Windows Update. Install the applicable updates.
If you boot the system and only display a "black screen", locate the HDD light, look for a solid or blinking indicator. This indicate the system is working. Do not disturb this process until the light settles down. Windows will display the login screen once system is configured. This anomaly pertains mainly to W8 & 8.1 installations.
If your PC is in the "black screen" mode, NEVER shut down. It could cause a complete system malfunction.
If you are currently logged on and the W8 or 8.1 computer is sluggish, Windows is configuring the OS, again locate the HDD light & observe its action. This process uses most of the system’s resources, therefore games, APPS, & programs suffer as the consequence.
Desktop Screen – click on Restart & you will see an option to UPDATE & RESTART or UPDATE & SHUT DOWN.
I was performing an account deletion on my W8 laptop and encountered periods of "black screen". This could last anywhere for a couple of minutes to an hour.
The “black screen” may occur on other updates throughout the life of the computer. Windows will display the login screen once the system has configured the updates.
