Linux is an "Open Source" operating system... meaning its free for anyone to download. (Please note that some of the software included with the os may not be free so you may be charged for packages - Red Hat, etc)

Linux is based on the original UNIX (which mac is based on). It looks like a mesh between windows and mac (SUSE/Mandriva) and is much more secure than both of them...

Couple notes, anything on the Linux OS is case sensitive... So for a file called tEst.txT if you spelled it test.txt it wouldn't find it...

The structuring of the OS is quite different as everything is kernel based individually, where as Windows is based on a single kernel and uses extensions...

I use both and believe that the Linux is faster/more secure, but that there are more programs for Microsoft's Windows available...

Linux is a kernel, GNU/Linux is the Operating System. The GNU project started in the early 80 to create an entirely free (as in freedom) OS. With everything written except the Kernel, a college Student known as Linus Torvalds made a kernel and released with a free software license under the name Linux. People integrated this with GNU, so GNU/Linux was born and people could use a computer in freedom.

But as for GNU/Linux is concerned technically, it is entirely dependent on what distribution you use. Mandriva is a graphical install, easy to use, etc. it is what I use. However, if you want to do something hard and configure it specially to your exact hardware, Gentoo or Slackware is the way to go.

As for system specs go, you can configure it to however you want. I have a computer, which is currently acting as a server running on a 500 mHz processor and is running mandriva 2007 with no problems. There is a reason taht very old computers are running GNU/Linux. It is because it can be put together specifically for your machine. If you have a computer made in the last 5 years, you will have no problem running mandriva 2007. If you know what you are doing in the bash termanal, you can try your hand at Gentoo or Slackware.
