java i updated it ,and it crashed my computer! why did it do that? yes i know it was the java?

few month ago it keep wanting me to update java. so i said ok. next thing i know my pc went blank.i could not get on it.no way to get to restore as i know of. so i wined up reformatting my hole pc.i lost all my stuff.i had some backed up but not all. now it wants me to update again.java i updated it .and it crashed my computer!! why did it do that?.yes i know it was the java do i really need the update? that my question.thanks in advance.chats
