I'm leaning towards ubuntu, as I have used it before, but I don't really know,

While Ubuntu is edging more and more towards being a consumer OS historically all the distributions have been about getting it onto your computer where you can tweak or change it to suit yourself rather than just accepting the defaults. That means any distribution can be or become best for your needs, though I'd say Linux Mint is more flexible than Ubuntu.

These are my favorite. The thing I got against Unbuntu is that they take to much control over what is in it and the updating of the. I do not like someone else updating the programs I choose to have on my puter. The last one on my list is a bare bones version of Linux and it allows oyu to build it up from pretty much scratch.

For a beginner, I would suggest Ubuntu or another Debian distribution.
For someone more advanced, I'd suggest CentOS.
