-----FIRST OF ALL-----

Every other reply here is either half-assed or TL;DR

(TL;DR - too long, didn't read :P )

-----------------------------

0.) Make it smaller than 1024 in width, since the scrollbars and tabs ALSO count in. About 900-950 pix

1.) make the writing and layout and everything just a bit smaller

not smaller than how you see "I am using Frontpage 2003..."

2.) Make sure you have no "lots of free spaces inbetween table columns" or something like that.

3.) Background image size does not really influence how much you have to scroll. It's images, tables and frames that do so.

4.) I used IE5/6/7 They all sucked. Now I use FireFox. BUT... THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL between layout looks on pages, not that I could spot any. Css look all the same on both browsers. Javascript differs a bit, but doesn't influence layout much. Basic html is really nothing to worry about.

5.) About using Micrsoft products... DON'T!

Macromedia Dreamweaver is just about the best web page design soft this world has ever seen. Try that stuff instead...

Here's a javascript you can paste in and it detects the browser type:

Hmmm... your avatar... it still won't show up properly. Did you try switching it?

On the other hand I too cannot for christ sake synchronize my Flickr with my 360 so we're even ;)

darkSPY may be interested to learn that ANTIQUE is not the reason why more than HALF the people on the Internet use monitors with 800 x 600 resolution and why over 75% prefer web pages made to that format. The first reason is that many people just can't afford to continuously upgrade. CRT monitors and pentium 2's abound, especially in poorer areas which make up 76% of the planet. The second reason is that 75% of the world's population have visual difficulties in one way or another. They often prefer the larger print that 800 resolution offers. Finally, a sheet of paper is only 8 inches wide. (8.25 or 8.5 to be correct) As we advance into the 21st century, you don't see paper getting wider like computer monitors do you? The reason is simple - the human eye can't absorb long lines of text as in the so-called fine print on legal contracts. Even 800 pixels is too wide for the average person to concentrate, so most web pages even at that resolution are divided into columns.

So to answer your question, never design a web page to suit yourself or the facilities you have available. Always consider the people you're trying to attract. If it's kids, go for broke, but if it's for a wider audience, think about those people and what they may be up against. Keep you page to 800 maximum, keep your graphics to a minimum, keep your JPG dpi down to 96, keep your typeface 10pt or larger, avoid using Times Roman, http://www.ampsoft.net/webdesign-l/WindowsMacFonts.html keep your colors subdued http://www.wellstyled.com/tools/colorscheme2/index-en.html

and reap the rewards.

Keep your website size to a standard 1024 width, as this is a nominal resolution for pretty much most displays nowadays. It used to be 800, however anyone still running 800x600 is using an antique and shouldn't be on the internet.. lol.

Make the dimensions smaller and it helps to center the page. If it is too wide and long, go into the Properties area and make the dimensions smaller.
