After managing to remove Vista Antivirus 2010 from my laptop (using a friend's to write this), I rebooted the computer as directed, and found myself unable to open any files once it booted up again! The error message of the FILENAME.exe not found kept coming up.

I rebooted again and put it into safe mode, thinking I could go into msconfig and maybe see if something was wrong there; computer wasn't able to find msconfig.exe. Tried a system reboot, and computer isn't able to find the file association.

Help! What do I do? I can't access the internet from that laptop, I can't do a system restore... What should I do?

The best way is to download Ccleaner here http://bitly.com/UrALrK

Or you can go on Windows operating system locate the command prompt and go there to do the following:

Create a Recovery file of system and date it today.

Then begin by;

delete the 'Temp' folders..they have hidden subfolders so you need to set the attributes in order to bypass this. For each subfolder delete all cookies and rubbish left behnd after install-uninstalled programs. Do a 'dir' command to check your progress. Make sure the 'Temp' file is empty.

goto c:\windows\prefetch and delete everything in there..no exceptions

goto c:\windows folder and delete all the '$' files that have been installed by updates. They can all be succesfully deleted and just take up disk space.

Locate the Internet Temporary Files..Check to see how high the saving level is..some have it set at 30 days..but that stores faaaar tooo much data..though it slows down the system overal. Keep this to a minimum..suggest 2 or 5 at most.

Delete all 'cookies' all those you don't need.

Locate the windows directory and go through the folders you know and those you don't need. Check this once a week at least. Some programs will install under XP as NT and older systems where there is no check of systems weight.

Check to see that system files have not changed since last booting. Things like .ini files or .bat are important items.

Check for 'Hidden Directories' all over the disk...do this at the command prompt:

dir *.* /ah wil show these hidden directories

Check the 'dir' command for all parameters

You're friend or who ever managed to get rid of vista's built in antivirus has definitely did it the most brute force way possible, i mean half of the programs got damaged ? Here's the deal you must of damaged half of the progs while re-writing the files, so what you need to is find someone who has vista take out your hdd and connect it to a usb via external hdd usb adapter you can just temporary take apart any 2.5 inch usb drive and stick in your laptop hdd in there once you have connected your usb drive to a pc with the same type of vista os, you can just re-copy files that are displayed as missing on startup you will have to get the vista Av back too. For instance msconfig.exe missing than you just have to copy msconfig to system32 folder next time you boot taskmgr.exe missing than just copy taskmgr to sys32 folder and so and so on. Or if don't wanna be that professional about you can just pop in your vista dvd enter the boot menu via hitting F12 or Tab or F2 button at bios startup. And follow the on screen instruction and choose repair your os.
