My uncle had this old computer and I thought of swapping out some parts I had to make it faster and better. I changed the motherboard, the RAM, and the CPU. I kept the IDE hard drive and IDE dvd/cd drive. I bought an IDE to SATA converter and plugged it onto the hard drive and dvd/cd drive. Everything is wired correctly, but when I turn it on it goes to a black screen boot media isn't detected. If I buy Windows 7 Home Premium will it help me boot the computer back up?

I think you created a new computer. There isn't any original componemts for the computer to boot to. It's new, not anything undetected. But, that's what it's saying because hasnt ever detected in the first place.

If you got one of those pci-e by pass cards, you need to hook your dvd and cd there, and use the ide cable to your hd from the mobo. I did, and it then booted.

I would also go to the bios, click ont eh load defaults, make sure the time and date are set, and that the ps2 is activated.

The jumper on the mobo might get it, to. It's the three pins connected by a plastic jumper. Move it over, then turn on the computer, let run a minute, and shut it off and replace the jumper back. This gives the computer to search out new components, and enter them in bios. It's a three pin, connectd by a two pin plug.

I know it'sa alot of work, but these are the problems I have ran in to when my comp. didn't boot.

You might try one hd that works, and that would convince yo that the comp. works. If does, and that would make it your hd, make sure you have a plastic jumper in the hd. It usually closet to the ide pins.

Vista in and of itself will not cause blue display error. Its a very steady working method, it does have problems, however no longer in that discipline. If you have constant issues with balance i might be very involved about the hardware within the process. You don't want to do an "improve installation" for definite, you can get the upgrade variant then layout and set up contemporary, look up how to do that so you do it correct. Doing an upgrade set up wont fix anything.

You upgrade everything but your bios, I hate to suggest to update the bios but in this case I think you need to do it, but another draw back is that bios may no be longer supported, so better look for a linux distro and see if it can help.,
