If you have the resources I would recommend buying Office '08 and the iWork suite and here's why: For your school work (and eventually college, I'm assuming you're still in high school) you'll need compatibility with other users, this means Office. In college all your professors will post their lectures and notes in Office format and having the Office suite just makes life easier. For personal work I recommend iWork, it's just smoother and more refined, giving you more creative options for your compositions with little difficulty. If you don't want to pay money for both, stick with Office. Edit to add: Don't buy the 2004 edition, the update to 2008 improved just about every aspect of the software in addition to adding compatibility with the current office suite for Windows (2010). Buying 2004 would be a huge mistake.

It's unfortunate, but when Microsoft ported Microsoft Office from the Mac over to the PC they ran into the little problem of no Apple-key, so they changed a lot of the shortcuts.

Fortunately, all the original Office shortcuts are still in play on the Mac. Getting a complete, categorized list of the keyboard shortcuts on the Mac is as simple as searching Word, Excel, or PowerPoint help and typing Keyboard Shortcuts.

Did you know that in Mac Excel you can customize your own keyboard shortcuts? Most versions of Windows Excel don't offer this capability.

Don't forget there are also Mac OS keyboard shortcuts. When you see Finder in the upper left corner, choose Help > Mac Help and search for Keyboard Shortcuts there, too. Mac OS keyboard shortcuts supersede any shortcuts you make in Office.
