Hi,

How can i locate my Windows temporary file folder?
I've download some program setups that are giving me an error message when i try and open them. "unable to execute file in temporary directory. Setup aborted"
What temporary directory would these be placed in and how can i access it?

Thanks

To locate your "temp" folder click "my computer", the Local disk or C drive, "documents and settings", then your profile name folder and then "local settings". (I know. That's long but if your dealing with computers for a while you get used to it)

Normally "local settings" is hidden so if it is go up to "tools", "folder options" and then the "view" tab" and click on "show hidden files and folders". You should find it in that Local settings folder now. If you don't then that's why your getting the error message so you'll probably have to re-create it cos it's missing - which it shouldn't be!!

Anyway, your TEMP folder is used automatically to store files either for installing software or during a computer's operation and processing. Maybe the error message means that the program setups you downloaded are corrupt or faulty or could even have a trojan virus causing the computer to come up with this error message. I would check out that possibility first.

If you need more help let me know.

DeleteMe is a FREE useful program which allows you to delete unchanged files from a specified path defined. It can be effectively used for cleaning files from temporary folders, can log files and folders or you may also clean files from network shared folders which are supposed to be clean on regular time basis. After installing DeleteMe you will need to configure the path of the temporary folder or any other custom folder in which you want to delete files and folders

The other posts are correct in describing where to find the temp folder, but to solve your problem you probably want to right-click the link to the setup program on the website, and use Save target as - and choose your desktop as the location.

By default when you download something and run it straight away in Internet Explorer, it will put it in the temporary internet files folder. This has restrictions stopping things being written to and changed, which is why the setup program aborts. Downloading it to your desktop and running it from there should fix the problem.

A real quick way to find out what is in your temporary folder is to go to START, RUN, then in the Open field key in %temp% and run that. It will open a dialog box of files in temporary folder locations. Most of the time all of the files can be deleted unless your system is currently using them. You will get a denied error message if the file is currently in use.

i had the same problem. cos i am pretty computer illiterate! the only way i could get around it was, when i clicked to download the file, it shows you the destination folder, i.e temp/blah blah blah, i copied and pasted the destination. it worked for me.

good luck

Temporary folders are in many locations:

C:\Windows\temp

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Local Settings\Temp

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Local Settings\Temporary
