To check the version of Windows: right-click My Computer>Properties.
No great differences between the two. Pro just has more background services to run (which can be a pain in the a$$) + a couple of networking features ... not really important.
But it doesn't really matter. If your PC can take it ... go for it. Pro won't hurt it.

Click on "Start"
Tilt your head 90 degrees to the left.
Attempt to read the text on the left side of the menu.
As for the differences, XP Home Edition doesn't have all of the features that XP Professional does. For example, IIS and a few other development/server tools. So if you're a developer, you want XP Professional. Otherwise XP Home can do everything else.

First off, go to Control Panel. After opening this window, double click on "System" It should then tell you what operating system you are running under System. There are several different "versions" of XP (core). Pro, media, and home are all different versions of XP.

Right-click My Computer and click Properties. The version should be listed there. If you don't have a My Computer icon, click on Start, and it should be available on the right of the start menu. You'll then follow the instructions as indicated previously.
