Overall a Linux based platform can perform most of the tasks equally as well as a Windows based platform using the likes of Ubuntu and its derivative distros. However Linux does have its limitations with some applications and in particular gaming. For example alongside Linux Mint I retain a partition with XP on to run specific applications such as Dreamweaver CS5, Office 2007 etc.

If you intend to run a number of Windows applications I suggest Dual Booting by installing Linux inside Windows

Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning

Download Ubuntu Desktop Edition

http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

You download the ISO. image of Ubuntu 10.10 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

Ubuntu 10.10 can also be run straight from the LiveCD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive

Download Ubuntu Desktop Edition (Windows installer standalone Download) no LiveCD needed

Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) User Guide

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 LTS and Linux Mint 10 Main Edition which are built upon Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Ubuntu 10.10 they are easy to install and easy to use plus they come with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint has a similar installer called mint4win (mint4win works the same as the Ubuntu Windows installer so the instructions outlined above are almost identical)

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

mint4win keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Linux Mint LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the mint4win installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Linux Mint is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Linux Mint

Linux Mint 10 Download

Linux Mint 10 User Guide

Linux Mint 9 LTS and Linux Mint 10 as with Ubuntu 10.10 can also be run straight from the LiveCD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive

There are several reasons cited as to why Linux is better...

It's free - no denying that, but the OS is only a relatively small price, the TOC (total cost of ownership) is about the same when you factor in training and support. Really only applies to businesses but Windows has much more software to choose from than either Windows or Linux.

It's open source - so what? Who edits kernel code? The kernel alone contains 13.5 million lines of code (v2.6.36) mess up the wrong line and it may not boot.

It's more secure - it is, only because it's got less than 1% of the market share - who's going to write viruses for such little return? One thing it does though, which Windows should do, is not use the admin account by default.

It must be better because companies use it on servers - 80% of companies run Windows servers, 50% run Linux (some companies run both which is why 130% not 100%) - http://www.zdnet.com/blog/microsoft/idc-windows-server-still-rules-the-server-roost/6424

Linux comes with everything I need - it's true, most distros come with everything except the kitchen sink, whether you want or need it.

Linux doesn't crash - yes it does, and so do Macs

Over the years I've regularly used Windows, Macs and Linux. I run my own Linux webserver, I even like using Linux, but it's just an operating system and not worth getting my knickers in a twist over.

One thing I really do like about Linux is the update system where all the installed software is updated from the repositories.

Try Linux for yourself, there's plenty of Live CDs around which you can boot from and will not disturb your system files - http://www.livecdlist.com/

If you like it then install it, if you don't then continue using Windows. One major count against Linux is stil lhardware support. The SANE drivers are getting better but you have to check the drivers are available for Linux before you buy any hardware.

Ok, first if you are using windows and want linux... You'd better get linux. And linux doesn't have many good laptops, and i don't know of they even have any. Windows is good for people starting off and want to download/ good security. Linux is very good for internet connections and still very good security. But the Mac is the best. It excells in mostly everything. And my Computer and moniter which is moniter: HP L1710 and Desktop: HP Compaq, Do not get it. One: when i go on most sites, even if my virus checker reads positive, some random security analysis pops up and says i have 22 viruses and some random virus checker comes up saying download and product code like i don't even have one. Then when i x out and open up my virus checker and delete the viruses, i open internet explorer and it says, too much malware, then i x that out and it freezes. When i turn it off, and turn it on, it says safe mode etc. I get back on and half the programs are gone. This has happened 3 times since last christmas. I got it under control, but i don't know how long.

i exploit a Mac and that i think of that's great. Key issues to observe with regards to the Mac: that's a steep studying curve coming from a residing house windows based device. that's only somewhat greater high priced than your residing house windows device. The courses you checklist won't paintings natively on the mac. The Mac does enable you to place in residing house windows on it besides, so which you will run the residing house windows purposes. there's a version of microsoft place of work (observe, excel etc...) for the Mac. stable tip: i might propose going into your community apple keep and having a glance at a 21" iMac or a fifteen" MacBook professional (later is a working laptop or pc, former a computer). i don't be attentive to plenty approximately Linux. i like my Mac (some might say somewhat too plenty) and that i might propose it to all people. have you ever seen upgrading your workstation hardware tona swifter device and boosting the working gadget to residing house windows 7? may well be somewhat greater good fee. desire this facilitates!

There are more programs available for Windows. Linux is a little difficult to get full use of until you learn.

Vista? ANYTHING is better than Vista (even Mac OS). Vista was a bug that escaped from Microsoft - it should never have been released.

You can have both on your computer.

Advantages

It is legally free while you have to pay for Windows.

Disadvantages.

Not so popular. So less support available even among experts.
