Installing Linux Ubuntu?

I am installing the Ubuntu linux OS on my windows 98 computer, I got it to load and it gave me a menu, i selected install/start. Then it loaded a lot of stuff and a small window appeared and then the screen went to a purple color and stayed that way, what is the problem, or what am i doing wrong?
