I recently installed (not upgrade from XP) Windows Vista Ultimate (not sp1). I am running it on a 32-bit system or x32. When I looked in System under Control Panel, I saw that it still needed to be activated so I clicked the link for activation. However, it said that my key was invalid and gave me options to purchase. I became very confused so I went to Windows Genuine Advantage to check if my Windows was genuine. It passed the test and yet I can't activate. Please help and thanks in advance.

Is it a legal copy? I know that a license is only valid for one machine technically, so if you installed it on another PC, that might explain why. Call up Microsoft and they should be able to help you out with that.

You should contact Microsoft® customer service about this and if your windows version is genuine, then you would get a new key or a refund.

after you install and run the validation tool from windows updates..it will check to see if your windows is a valid copy..once it passes...it should activate automatically and allow you to use windows update...don't worry about activating it....cheers
