How do I adjust line spacing in MS Word?

I am trying to clean up a document that has a numbered list. The numbered list is apparently double spaced between each item, and it needs to be single spaced. I've already tried using the Line Spacing feature, but it says that it's already single spaced... when it is obviously not. I tried choosing 1, which is single-space, but nothing happens.

1. This paragraph is a sample of what I want to do. It's single spaced in each section
as it should be. I have a second numbered section below, and this is how it looks

2. Notice the 'double space between these 2 sections.
I want to get rid of that double space and make it single.
3. It should look like this-- no gap between the sections.
4. However, when I go to the button in the tool bar, it says single space between the
numbered items, but it's not single. When I select single space, nothing happens.

I've tried back-spacing, or retyping everything over again but the formatting won't revert to single space.

It stays double, like this. ^^ I've tried backspace, back tab, format, and nothing works. When I back the section up so that it's right next to the previous section, then choose single space and hit enter, it goes right back to the double spacing though the button says single space. Even the 'inches' function won't work. If I hit the Numbering function, it re-orders my sections and re-numbers them with sub-numbers and sub-sections at random.

What do I do to fix this??

This is not double spacing even though it seems to be. The default in 2007 and newer is to add 10 points after each paragraph. In a list this appears to be double spacing.

Two simple ways to handle this: highlight the area and on the Home tab, Styles group click on No Spacing style. Shift return will not work because numbering is a paragraph format. Shift-return gives you a new line but not a new paragraph. The second way is to highlight the area and press Ctrl-1 for single spacing.

EDIT: This may be a style of bulleting. Your default style may have been replaced with double spacing. Try highlighting the bulleted area and pressing Ctrl-1.

EDIT2: With Word closed, at the Start button or Run space, depending on your OS, paste this: winword.exe /a

(There is a space before the /a.) This will load Word without your copy of this template.

If things work correctly now, locate your copy of normal.dot and delete it. Word will create a new copy of this template for new documents.

I have Microsoft office 2010. There is a way to keep

from skipping a line. Now this works for me. When I get

ready to go to the next line Hold down left Shift key

and hit enter and it does a single line space.

I am not sure if that works on other versions of

Microsoft Office or not. But it works on my version.

Also if, you already have some data that is double

line spaced you can change it to single line spacing.

Go to second line ↔ cursor all the way left side

behind the first letter or number. Hit back space.

that will connect it to the top line. Then place your

cursor behind it hold down the left shift key and

hit enter and that line will go single line under the

other line. I probably have you well confused by now.
