If you are interested in Debian but are a novice with Linux in general then I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint Debian Its easy to install and use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint Debian Download

Linux Mint Debian User Guide pdf.

http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/stable/9/user-guide/english.pdf

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint Debian then you need to create a Bootable LiveDVD for installation

Linux Mint Debian can also be run direct from the LiveDVD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive

Linux use to be a little beat more complicated that Windows for two reasons I think: 1. It is community based software and the GUI, user friendly and usability features are relative new compare to Linux existence. Firsts Linux versions didn’t have final users in mind and was more an experiment than a commercial product. 2. Windows users are the majority of people that does not care too much on how the computer stuff works; with Linux, instead, you need to understand few things first and that’s probably why some Linux users see their Windows user counterparts as some kind of inferior category. Right now there are few Linux distributions with final users in mind like: Suse, Mandrake, Ubunto and Gentoo

There are around 300 distros of linux available today and most of them free of cost. You can get an idea from this web site : http://distrowatch.com/

Each one has its own strength and weakness. But for shell scripting and python programming there will be insignificant difference among the various distros, because the underlying OS is Linux for all distros. Ubuntu linux is a good starting point because it is simple and straight forward. Register your name here and get a free CD by postal service : www.ubuntu.com. Also remember most distros come as Live CD so that you can try the OS without installing it on a HDD. For comprehensive information about Linux read this : http://www.linux.org/

Are you planning to get Red Hat Certification?

If you are then look into getting CentOS.
