It's a decision you need to make on your own, not what we say you "should" or "should not" do. I recommend you read up on Win 10 so you can make a solid decision about it. See what its features are like and then decide if you think you'd like it.

The biggest thing you need to do is make sure all of your hardware is compatible with Win 10. The main issues I've seen since the upgrade have been driver updates needed for a lot of hardware devices. This is not a show-stopping point, but it is what anybody goes thru ANYTIME there is a new operating system released because hardware and software manufacturers have to catch up with the new technology, and often times this requires either a new driver released or a new version of their software. Other than that, just minor issues here and there I've read about.

You have a full YEAR to take advantage of the free upgrade offer. 29 jul 15 - 29 jul 16 is how long it will be there. That's plenty of time for you to do some reading on Win 10 to make your decision.

If you want it wait a few months for the worst of the bugs to be ironed out. The early adopters are the unpaid guinea pigs.

From what I've seen of it windows 10 is the best os they've made in a long while.

However, I do not think that I will be upgrading. I'm a heavy computer user. I use a lot of programmes that are quite specialised that won't be made compatible with windows 10 in a hurry. Some organisations I work for still use XP on a special extended license because of this. On a personal note I'm very uncomfortable about how little control I will have of the OS not to mention the monitoring of my computer usage. When 7 becomes more of a hindrance than a tool I will return to linux for almost everything.

Windows 10 Pros and Cons

Pros:

- New UI

- Start Menu brought back

- Cortana

- Microsoft Edge (UBER FAST)

- New Apps (Film and TV, Groove Music..)

- DirectX 12

Cons (rumors are indicated with *) :

- Sends MASS amounts of your data to Microsoft. Including Personal Information.

- Anti-Piracy System

* - OS Monthly Subscription, Paid Apps, Monitoring, etc.

- Forced! Auto Updates

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I loved Windows 10, but the privacy issues stated in Microsofts Windows 10 EULA is very generalized which makes me very uncomfortable. So I'm moving back to Windows 8.1 even though I goddamn hate it with a passion like no other...

Also make a Windows 8.1 Bootable Media or .iso file!!!

Because even though they state that you can return to your previous OS within a month through a setting in windows. I actually could not. The option disappeared and my System Restore points were ALL deleted. And I only upgraded. I also kept my Windows.old file as well. (See Image for proof of this)

NO NO NO

I would not upgrade to Windows 10. It is spyware masquerading as an OS.

By default it logs just about everything you do.

http://bgr.com/2015/07/31/windows-10-upgrade-spying-how-to-opt-out/

They say you can opt out of it but it still phones home, it's a trap

http://www.extremetech.com/computing/212160-windows-10-still-phones-home-even-when-ordered-not-to-do-so

Then there is the matter of not being able to turn off auto updates or selecting what they install. In other words with Windows 10 M$ can install anything they want on your puter.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2949621/windows/windows-10-will-force-automatic-updates-for-all-home-users.html

They have a bad track record with updates, but now it will get worse.

http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-pulls-updates-recommends-uninstall-7000032678/

http://www.zdnet.com/article/has-microsoft-stopped-testing-their-updates/

I saved the worse for last The other reason for forcing updates on you is to also force new releases of the OS on you. They call it Windows as a service. This means the next time they have a Vista or Windows 8 you will not have a choice to update to it. They will use your auto update feature to force it down your throat. Everone knows the history of M$ and how bad they can be in detroying a good OS.

I have personally upgraded to Windows 10 and it's working perfectly, yes I have read about issues people have with it. So I can only say TRY IT, if it doesn't work you can always go back to your previous windows as it gives you option to do so. If it does work even better, but personally I love this version of windows it's something different but have to agree that some features still need to be upgraded.

You can run the upgrade assistant from within the Get Windows 10 icon on the lower right corner of your screen (if your system meets at least the minimum requirements) to have an idea of any potential compatibility issues.

I upgraded to Windows 10 because it does replace Windows 8.1 which Microsoft will stop supporting at some point in time. Having used it for a couple of days, I have to say it is better.

Many people have got into trouble when Upgrading, Mainly I suspect because they rushed it.

First get FileHippo and Ninite and using these make sure every driver and programme is up to date. Also clean off any programmes that you don't or hardly ever use. Use spybot to remove any naughty programmes that should not be running on your computer.

Having a nice clean computer, upgrade AND AS SOON as you get a working version of Windows 10 - BACKUP and set a Restore point. Now use File Hippo again then BACKUP and set another restore point. That action should make sure all drivers are correct and drivers are correct - they will differ for Windows 10.

Moral, do some work to get everything right and keep Backing up and setting restore points. I had a failure at one point and just used the Backup to restore the system and did not make the same mistake twice.

On You Tube there is a Video suggesting which switches in Settings to turn off to keep yourself safe. Follow that.

Hopefully, by taking your time, you will have a fully working and stable machine.

According to Microsoft, the major reason that Windows 10 is being offered as a free upgrade to Windows 7 and 8.1 users is that they want to make sure that as many users as possible are being supported with performance, compatibility, and security updates as far into the future as possible.

That being said, the upgrade will in some cases mean that older software will no longer be compatible [and thus stop working], and has occasionally resulted in other issues with software or filesystems. Please check all your installed software on the manufacturer's website to make sure it will still work with the newer version of Windows, and ensure you have your original disc and/or product key ready to reinstall it if necessary.

You will also have the option to roll back the installation of Windows 10 for 30 days after the original upgrade. If major issues occur after you try an upgrade, we recommend you do so.

It is always advisable to be patient. Allow other to use it.. report crashes, etc. Let Microsoft correct all bugs and errors. Let major companies give full support on win10. The biggest thing you need to do is make sure all of your hardware is compatible with Win 10. The main issues I've seen since the upgrade have been driver updates needed for a lot of hardware devices.

Its your call at last..

I had 8.1 and they let me upgrade to 10 , and it didn't change very many things , from 8.1 to ten , not much changes and like they say if it's free better move on because they will eventually quit supporting what ever isn't the latest , if they ever go to 11 probably better move with them . they can keep it secure so much easier , everything works better for them . sure it sucks having to upgrade every 5 minuets ,. but bite the bullet and role over . it helps to keep current , it hurts less if you move every time they do before you get happy with something they will not support any more . it hurts a lot then ALOT .

Dude honestly when I got the memo I was like omfg free upgrade. I've had windows 10 for three weeks and it works great. I actually like it better than windows 8.1 no lie my ***. Other people probably had bad results because maybe it's their computer because I mean how would upgrading crash the computer? Also how would it make the screen flash continuously? As well for the curser a constant blue circle? All those people saying that windows 10 now invades your privacy, I mean haven't they always so why say no to a free upgrade.

In windows 10 the software is defiantly better and the update is good but…

If wait for a couple of months to pass buy until you download it this is because with it being recently released and new it is still going to be buggy and there could be faults (major and minor) also the waiting time for the software to fully download will now take less time as now it ruffley takes about 2 hours to install but in about 2 months time it will only take round about 20 mins if that :)

I upgraded and so far I haven't had any problems... maybe you should watch youtube reviews and see what they other people think depending on how you wanna use your system. I think Win10 would be good for gaming with its new DX12 but then again I don't really have the computer hardware that uses DX12 so no difference for me.

Indifferent:

-- New UI

-- New Apps

Pro:

-- Start Menu

-- Cortana (voice recognition, yay)

-- DirectX 12

-- Forced Auto Updates (very good from the security perspective)

Con:

-- Cortana (requires logging in to machine with Microsoft Account)

-- Microsoft Edge (no support for critical extensions aka adblock so it is useless)

-- Loads of PII to Microsoft via Cortana.

-- Forced Auto Updates (some customization needed, specifically scheduling for those that need to be able to shutdown and go)

-- Shutting down takes many more steps.

-- Anti-Piracy System (not because of its purpose, but because its a waste of space. It will get disabled by pirates and only affect legit customers)

Never happening:

-- OS will never be a monthly subscription as it would literally have people running for the hills back to 7 and 8.1 which is the exact opposite of what Microsoft is trying for.

===DON"T EVER CHANGE SOMETHING===
