MKV movie format: Why is the audio out of sync with video?

It's an mkv movie file I did not create. Tried playing with Media Player Classic (updated with current K-Lite Codec Pack), Windows Media Player (same result as MPC), and SMPlayer. MPC is using FFD Show and Haali splitter codecs to play it.

Some audio syncs and some audio goes too fast for the video. It varies throughout the whole movie.

I had a similar problem once in which a movie wouldn't sync between audio and video using Nero Showtime player, but it synced pefectly with Media Player Classic.

Any ideas?
